The Houston Dynamo have a bit of Scottish influence and leaned on Braveheart and bagpipes for motivation.
Head coach Dominic Kinnear has Scottish lineage, assistant John Spencer has represented Scotland internationally as a player and has played in the Scottish Premier League while Paul Dalglish is the son of Scottish legend Kenny Dalglish who remains a Liverpool icon.
Before this past Sunday’s semi-final match against Chivas USA the giant scoreboard at Robertson Stadium (thank you Philip Anschutz) played a Mel Gibson speech about freedom from the movie braveheart. Open completion fireworks went off in a corner of the stadium and out walked bagpipers to the roars of the crowd. It set the tone for a great night of soccer.
Kinnear says he had nothing to do with it yet without a doubt it effected the crowd positvely The Dynamo went on to defeat Chivas USA dramatically, the question is will they do it again this weekend. Kinnear has been known to be superstitious……The Rapids will practice this Saturday at Rice University from 11-12 pm….Clint Mathis will join me as well as Dynamo players and players from the Eastern Conference on a special MLS Cup playoff preview show this Saturday at 12 pm to 1:30 pm on 790am The Sports Animal…call in number is 713-212-5790
